L17 — Driving at 17 in Czechia: Complete Guide
In the first year of the L17 program, over 24,000 seventeen-year-olds got their license. They caused 6 accidents. Zero fatalities. Their peers who waited until eighteen and then drove on their own? 1,106 accidents and 6 deaths. If you're wondering whether it makes sense to start driving earlier — the numbers speak for themselves.
This guide walks you through the L17 program from the first step to the day your license automatically becomes a full one at eighteen. Requirements, mentor, training, insurance, transition — everything up to date for 2026, backed by Czech law and data from the program's first two years. At Kvalty.cz we compare over 1,000 driving schools across the Czech Republic, and here we'll help you understand how L17 works from start to finish.

L17 in Numbers
The L17 program has been running in Czechia since January 1, 2024. Since then, tens of thousands of young drivers have tried it and the safety data is unambiguous.
As of March 2026, over 57,000 seventeen-year-olds have obtained their license and more than 30,000 mentors have registered. Interest keeps growing — while only 770 people started with L17 in January 2024, by January 2026 it was 2,185 new drivers in a single month. Roughly every third new category B driver in Czechia now uses L17.
Mentors rate the program an average of 6.6 out of 7 points. And the safety statistics? They speak for themselves.
| Indicator | L17 drivers (17, with mentor) | New drivers 18+ (without mentor) |
|---|---|---|
| Accidents (2024) | 6 | 1,106 |
| Minor injuries | 4 | 457 |
| Serious injuries | 0 | 31 |
| Fatalities | 0 | 6 |
| Point-carrying offences | 71 | 772 |
This is no coincidence. In Germany, where a similar BF17 program has been running for over twenty years, the accident rate among accompanied drivers drops by 28.5%. With six or more months of accompanied driving, the accident rate drops by as much as 57%.
Why does it work?
A year of driving with a mentor gives a new driver thousands of kilometers of real-world practice — under the guidance of an experienced driver who can advise in unusual situations. By eighteen, you'll have accumulated experience that would otherwise only come in the first year of solo driving — the period when accidents are statistically most common.
What It Will Cost You
A standard category B driving school course in Czechia costs an average of 17,000 to 25,000 CZK — and there is absolutely no surcharge for L17. The price is identical to a regular course for eighteen-year-olds. On top of the course fee, add the exam fee of 700 CZK, license issuance of 200 CZK, and a medical certificate for 300 to 500 CZK.
Mentor registration is free if you submit it together with your license application. If you want to add another mentor later, you'll pay 100 CZK (80 CZK electronically). A detailed cost overview can be found in the chapter Requirements.
