How to Remove Penalty Points — Training & Deduction
Safe driving training removes 4 points (CZK 4,000–6,890). Automatic deduction after 12 months. Conditions, training centers, and step-by-step guide.
Getting your license back after hitting 12 points costs nearly CZK 16,000 and takes a year. Safe driving training that removes 4 points and can prevent the whole ordeal costs CZK 4,000 to 6,890 and takes one day. Yet most drivers don't deal with their points until it's too late.
In the Czech Republic, you have two ways to get points off your record. The first requires nothing but time and a clean slate — points are deducted automatically if you don't commit another offense. The second takes action on your part — you complete safe driving training at an accredited facility and file a request at your local authority. Both methods can be combined, and in this chapter we'll walk through exactly how each one works.
Quick summary:
- Automatic deduction: 4 points removed after 12 months without an offense, another 4 after 24 months, full reset after 36 months
- Safe driving training: removes 4 points, costs CZK 4,000–6,890, once per calendar year maximum
- Combining both methods lets you reduce your balance by up to 8 points in a single year
- Points are not deducted automatically after training — you must file a request at your municipal authority

Automatic Deduction — Time Works in Your Favor
If you simply follow the rules after an offense and nothing else happens, the system deducts points on its own. No application, no form, no trip to the authority. All you need to do is not commit another point-carrying offense.
Under Section 123e of Act No. 361/2000, automatic deduction works in three stages. After 12 consecutive calendar months without a point-carrying offense, 4 points are deducted. If you last another 12 months (24 total), another 4 points come off. And after a full 36 months of a clean record, all remaining points are wiped — your balance goes to zero.
The catch is the word "consecutive." Any new point-carrying offense resets the clock back to the start. Imagine you have 8 points and drive cleanly for 11 months. Then you get fined for using your phone while driving — and those 11 months are gone. You start counting from zero again.
That's why this method only works for drivers who are confident they can go a full 12 months without any issues.
The municipal authority records the automatic deduction within 3 business days of the condition being met. You can check your current balance anytime on the Transport Portal — online, free, in 30 seconds.
Clock paused during driving bans
If you have an active driving ban, the countdown for automatic point deduction is paused for its duration. The clock resumes only after the ban expires (Section 123e(3) of Act No. 361/2000).
Safe Driving Training — The Faster Path
If you don't want to wait a year and your points are making you nervous, there's a faster option. Complete safe driving training at an accredited facility and the authority removes 4 points from your record. The entire process — from training to updated records — can be done in a few weeks.
But it's not as simple as "pay and forget." The law sets several conditions you must meet before the authority will actually deduct the points.
Conditions for Deduction
First, on the day you complete the training, your balance must not exceed 10 points. If you have 11 or 12, training won't help — it's too late. Second, none of your offenses can carry a 6-point penalty. Six-point offenses are the most serious — driving under the influence, significant speeding in a built-up area, causing a serious accident. If you have any such record, the training route isn't available to you.
Another condition concerns frequency. You can request point deduction through training a maximum of once per calendar year. Not once per 12 months — once per calendar year. That's an important distinction we'll come back to.
And finally: the training certificate must not be older than 1 month when you submit your request at the authority. So you can't complete training in March and file the request in October.
Training won't help at 11–12 points
Point deduction through safe driving training is only available if you have 10 points or fewer. At 11 or 12 points, your only option is to wait for automatic deduction — or challenge the records through objections if you have grounds to dispute them.
What the Training Involves
Safe driving training isn't a lecture in a conference room. It's a full-day program at a specialized driving track where you practice situations that normal driving never prepares you for. Honestly — most people who've done it say it was the most useful day behind the wheel they've ever had.
The program lasts approximately 7 hours and has three parts. It starts with theory (1 to 3 hours), covering vehicle dynamics, behavior in crisis situations, and principles of defensive driving. Then comes the main event — practical exercises on the track (3 to 4 hours). You brake on wet surfaces, swerve around obstacles at full speed, handle skids, and experience aquaplaning.
All on a safe circuit where there's no risk of a head-on collision. The session ends with feedback from the instructor and an evaluation.
There's no final exam. You just need to complete the full program — and the center issues you a training completion certificate. This certificate is the key document you'll need for the authority.

What to Bring
You can't show up to training with just your ID card. The list is longer than you'd expect, and one forgotten item can cost you the whole day.
You'll need your ID card, driving license, and a penalty point record extract that must be no older than 3 days. The three-day limit is strict — an extract from last week won't be accepted. You can download the extract for free via the Citizen Portal or Transport Portal (you'll need a data box or bank identity), get it at a Czech POINT for about CZK 100, or at your municipal authority for CZK 30 for the first page plus CZK 10 for each additional page. A detailed guide on getting your extract is in the chapter How to Check Your Points.
You'll also need your vehicle insurance document (green card) and — this is the thing drivers forget most often — your own car. Training centers don't provide vehicles for point-deduction courses. The car must be roadworthy and have all valid documents.
Where to Do the Training
There are approximately 9 accredited safe driving centers in the Czech Republic. The official list is maintained by the Ministry of Transport. The centers are spread across the country, but not in every region — so you may need to travel a fair distance.
| Center | Location | Region | Approximate Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Polygon Jihlava | Jihlava | Vysočina | CZK 4,000 |
| Polygon Hradec Králové | Hradec Králové | Královéhradecký | CZK 5,000–5,500 |
| Autodrom Sosnová | Sosnová (Česká Lípa) | Liberecký | CZK 5,000–5,500 |
| Autodrom Vysoké Mýto | Vysoké Mýto | Pardubický | CZK 5,000–5,500 |
| Autodrom Most | Most | Ústecký | CZK 5,490–5,985 |
| Polygon Brno (Automotodrom) | Brno | Jihomoravský | CZK 5,500–6,000 |
| MAX CARS Dlouhá Lhota | Příbram | Středočeský | CZK 5,980 |
| Steel Ring Třinec | Třinec | Moravskoslezský | CZK 5,000–6,000 |
| Libros Ostrava | Ostrava | Moravskoslezský | CZK 6,000–6,890 |
The price range spans nearly CZK 3,000. The cheapest training is at Polygon Jihlava for CZK 4,000, the most expensive at Libros Ostrava at up to CZK 6,890. It's worth comparing not just price but also availability — popular centers book up a month in advance, especially in spring and fall.
Book ahead
Training slots tend to fill up 2 to 4 weeks in advance. If you know you want to do the training, reserve your spot as early as possible — especially from March to October when demand peaks.
Step by Step — From Decision to Updated Records
The entire process from deciding "I want to reduce my points" to the moment your balance actually drops in the registry looks like this.
First, check how many points you have. Log in to the Transport Portal using bank identity — in 30 seconds you'll know where you stand. Confirm you have no more than 10 points and that none of your offenses carry 6 points. Also check whether you've already completed training in the current calendar year.
Then pick a center and book a date. Check the table above, compare prices and availability. Before the training day, download a fresh point record extract — remember, it must be no older than 3 days at the time of the training.
On the day, arrive at the track with your ID card, driving license, point extract, green card, and your own car. Complete the full program — theory, track exercises, evaluation — and receive your training completion certificate at the end.
Now comes the step many people forget. The certificate alone doesn't remove points. You must go to your municipal authority (ORP) within 30 days and submit a written request for point deduction. Attach the training certificate. You can find the request form on your authority's website or pick it up in person.
You can also submit the request electronically — via data box or email with a qualified electronic signature. There is no administrative fee for filing the request. The only cost is the training itself.
The authority processes the deduction within 3 business days of receiving your request. The points are backdated to the day you completed the training — not the day you filed the request. This matters if something else happened in between.

Strategic Tips — Maximizing Your Point Reduction
Automatic deduction and safe driving training can be combined. That means in a single year you can theoretically clear up to 8 points from your balance — 4 automatically (12 months without an offense) and 4 through training. For drivers with 8 or more points, this combination is a genuine license-saver.
There's another trick that comes from how the law defines the training frequency. You can use the training deduction once per calendar year — not once per 12 months. That means if you complete training in December 2026 and again in January 2027, you get two deductions of 4 points within a few weeks. Technically, these are two different calendar years, so it fully complies with the law. For a driver in a critical situation, that can be the difference between keeping and losing their license.
One more thing. If you believe points were assigned incorrectly — say, due to an inaccurate speed measurement or a mix-up between drivers — training isn't your only option. You can fight back through objections or appeals. Details are in the chapter Appeals and Defense.
December + January = double deduction
Safe driving training with point deduction can be done a maximum of once per calendar year. If you complete it in December of one year and January of the next, you get 2 × 4 points in a short period. For drivers with high point balances, this can be a crucial strategy.
Common Myths About Point Deduction
There's a lot of half-truths floating around about point deduction. Here are the most common ones — and the reality.
"Points are deducted automatically after training." No. The center issues you a certificate, but you must take it to the authority and submit a written request. Until you file the request, nothing changes in the registry. And remember — you only have 30 days from completing the training.
"Any skid school will remove my points." No. Point deduction is tied to safe driving training at an accredited safe driving center. A regular skid school, a sport driving course at a racetrack, or a corporate driver training program won't qualify — no matter how good they are. The center must hold accreditation from the Ministry of Transport.
"My points disappear immediately after training." Not quite. The authority processes the deduction within 3 business days of receiving your request. However, the points are backdated to the date you completed the training, not the date you filed the request.
"I can do training even with 12 points." No. The requirement is a maximum of 10 points on the day you complete the training. At 11 or 12 points, you can't use training for point deduction. If you're approaching the limit, act sooner — not when it's too late. Read the chapter on what happens when you reach 12 points to understand what's at stake.
Prevention Is Cheaper Than the Cure
Let's put it in numbers. Safe driving training costs CZK 4,000 to 6,890 and takes one day. Getting your license back after hitting 12 points costs approximately CZK 15,740, takes at least a year, and involves re-examination at a driving school, a medical checkup, and a traffic psychology assessment. And that doesn't count lost income, work complications, and disruption to your daily life.
If you have 4 or more points on your record, it's worth thinking about. One careless moment behind the wheel — phone, speed, red light — and you're another step closer to 12. Knowing your point balance and understanding which offenses carry how many points is the foundation. And if things start getting tight, safe driving training is the quickest and cheapest way to create a buffer.
Plus — and this is what most people who've done the training say — you learn things on the track that could save your life. Braking on wet roads, handling skids, evasive maneuvers. These aren't skills you pick up in everyday traffic. And if they help you react a fraction of a second faster just once, that day on the track pays for itself many times over.

Summary
- Automatic deduction: 12 months without an offense = −4 points, 24 months = −4 points, 36 months = full reset
- Safe driving training: removes 4 points, once per calendar year, conditions: max 10 points, no 6-point offenses
- Training cost: CZK 4,000–6,890 depending on center (cheapest Jihlava, most expensive Ostrava)
- Training certificate must be no older than 30 days when filing the request at the authority
- Points are not deducted automatically — you must file a written request at your municipal authority (ORP)
- Combining automatic and training-based deduction lets you reduce your balance by up to 8 points in a year
