Czech Penalty Point System — Full Guide 2026
Run two red lights and you lose your license for a year. It's that simple since 2024. The penalty point system got stricter, simpler, and started working as a real "two strikes and you're out" — yet most drivers still don't know how it actually works. As of December 31, 2024, over 449,000 drivers had points on their record. Another 39,407 had already maxed out completely.
At Kvalty.cz, we help drivers choose a driving school — and here we'll help you understand the system that protects or threatens your license. Everything is up to date for 2026, based on Czech law and Ministry of Transport data. In one place, you'll find answers for drivers with points, drivers after an offense, and those who want to avoid trouble altogether.
Quick summary:
- Since January 2024, there are 3 point tiers: 2, 4, and 6 points (previously 5 categories)
- Two most serious offenses (2 × 6 points) = license suspension for one year
- You can check your points online for free in 30 seconds via the Transport Portal
- Safe driving training removes 4 points (costs CZK 4,000–6,890)

The Point System in Numbers
Before you dive into the individual chapters, here are the numbers you'll be working with. They show how the system works in practice — and why you shouldn't underestimate it.
Every driver in the Czech Republic starts with a zero balance. Points are added for offenses. Once you reach 12, you lose your license for at least one year. The January 2024 reform (Act No. 271/2023 Coll.) simplified the entire system into three point tiers: 2, 4, and 6 points. The maximum — 6 points — is for running a red light, drunk driving, or exceeding the speed limit by 40+ km/h in a built-up area. Two such offenses and you're at 12 points.
In 2024, nearly 356,000 point-carrying offenses were recorded in the Czech Republic. That's an average of 972 offenses per day. Roughly 5,000 drivers max out each year — about 400 people per month who lost their license.

Most Common Offenses
Do you know what people collect points for most often? Here are the five offenses that together account for over 73% of all point-carrying violations in 2024. And two of them carry just 2 points — you barely notice them, yet points quietly add up.

|---|---|---|
| Exceeding speed by 10–19 km/h in built-up area | 2 | 29.24% |

Exceeding the speed limit by a few km/h seems harmless. But do it three times in a year and you've got 6 points. Add one phone call behind the wheel and you're at ten. You'll find the full breakdown in the traffic offenses and points table.
Three phone calls = license gone
Using your phone while driving carries 4 points. Three times in 3 years = 12 points = a year without your license. And that's not counting the fines: CZK 2,500–3,500 on the spot, or CZK 4,000–10,000 in administrative proceedings.
Frequently Asked Questions
It depends on by how much and where. In a built-up area: 10–19 km/h over = 2 points, 20–39 km/h over = 4 points, 40+ km/h over = 6 points. Outside built-up areas, the thresholds are higher. The full breakdown is in the Traffic Offenses and Points Table chapter.

You lose your license for at least 1 year. To get it back, you must pass a re-examination at a driving school, a medical check-up, and a traffic psychology evaluation. Total cost: approximately CZK 16,000. Details in the What Happens at 12 Points chapter.
Two ways. Automatically — after 12 months without an offense, 4 points are deducted. Actively — complete a safe driving training course at a driving polygon and 4 points are removed (cost CZK 4,000–6,890). More in the How to Remove Points chapter.
4 points + a fine of CZK 2,500–3,500 on the spot (or CZK 4,000–10,000 in administrative proceedings). Three phone offenses in 3 years = 12 points = license suspension.
Yes. All drivers who've had their license for less than 2 years are on a so-called "probationary license." One 6-point offense means mandatory training at a driving school + a traffic psychology interview. Cost: CZK 8,500–15,000. More in the Point System for New Drivers chapter.
Yes. You can file written objections at your municipal office. If you have 12 points and file objections within 5 business days, you can keep driving until the office decides. Details in the Appeals and Defense chapter.

What Changed in 2024
In January 2024, a major amendment to the Road Traffic Act (Act No. 271/2023 Coll.) took effect, bringing fundamental changes. If you're searching for information online, be careful — many articles still use the old rules.
The point system was simplified from five tiers to three: 2, 4, and 6 points. Previously there were five point tiers (2, 3, 4, 5, and 7), which was confusing. Now it's clear: minor offenses carry 2 points, moderate ones 4, and the most serious ones 6. The 12-point threshold for license suspension remains the same, but with only 3 tiers you reach it faster.
A probationary license now applies to all new drivers — a two-year probation period with stricter rules for offenses. And the new L17 option allows driving a car from age 17 under a mentor's supervision.
July 2025 Amendment
Since July 1, 2025 (Act No. 130/2025 Coll.), a new offense was added: dangerous turning — carrying 4 points. The damage threshold requiring police to be called to an accident was also raised to CZK 200,000.
Safe driving training now deducts 4 points instead of the previous 3. And if you have bank identity, you can check your point balance online in half a minute. The system can also automatically send you SMS or email notifications about any changes to your points — just enable notifications on the Transport Portal.
