New Driver Insurance in Czechia — Complete Guide

You'll pay CZK 7,414 a year for car insurance. Your dad pays CZK 2,874. The difference? Over four and a half thousand crowns per year — just because of your age. Insurers have the data to back it up: drivers with less than two years of experience make up just 3% of all drivers but cause 11% of all accidents. And you're paying for that statistical imbalance.

The good news is you can do something about it. At Kvalty.cz, we compare over 1,000 driving schools across the Czech Republic — and here we'll help you navigate the insurance you'll need right after getting your licence. Liability insurance, comprehensive coverage, why you're paying more, how to save thousands per year, and what to do if you crash. Everything up to date for 2026, based on Act No. 30/2024 Coll. and real prices from Czech insurers.

Quick summary:

  • Liability insurance (povinné ručení) is legally required — without it you face fines and a daily charge of CZK 51–109
  • Young drivers (18–24) pay an average of CZK 8,700/year — 2–3× more than an experienced driver
  • By combining strategies (comparing insurers, telematics, choosing the right car) you can realistically save CZK 3,000–8,000 per year
  • Since April 2024, a new law sets minimum coverage limits at CZK 50/50 million

Insurance in Numbers

Before you dive into the individual chapters, here are the numbers you'll be working with. They show why insurers charge young drivers more — and how much you can save when you know how.

The average price of liability insurance in Czechia for 2025 is CZK 4,752 per year. Young drivers aged 18–24, however, pay an average of CZK 8,700 — nearly double. In extreme cases, premiums climb above CZK 20,000 per year, especially for more powerful cars in big cities. The reason is straightforward: every fifth 18-year-old driver causes an accident. Insurers have the math worked out and price accordingly.

But there's a flip side. The maximum no-claims bonus reaches up to 60%. For every accident-free year you earn a 5–10% discount — so after three to five years of clean driving, your premium drops significantly. And in the meantime, there are plenty of strategies to bring the cost down from day one.

New Law Since April 2024

Act No. 30/2024 Coll. came into effect on 1 April 2024, replacing the quarter-century-old liability insurance law. For you as a new driver, this means several things.

The insurance obligation shifted from the vehicle owner to the vehicle operator. If you buy a car, you're the one who must have insurance — even if the car is formally registered under your parents' name. Minimum coverage limits were raised to CZK 50 million for both personal injury and property damage. And since October 2024, the premium must be paid before the insurance takes effect — retroactive activation is no longer possible.

From 2026, electronic detection of uninsured vehicles is in place. The vehicle registry is now linked with insurers, so uninsured cars are flagged automatically. The daily contribution to the Czech Insurers' Bureau (ČKP) for an uninsured personal car has risen to CZK 51–109 per day — that's CZK 18,600–39,800 per year. Driving without insurance simply doesn't pay.

Accident without insurance = you pay everything

If you cause an accident without liability insurance, ČKP pays the injured party from the guarantee fund — and then recovers the full amount from you. Act No. 30/2024 Coll. removed the previous cap of CZK 300,000. In a serious accident, damages can run into the millions.

Insuring Through Your Parents — Common but Risky

About 75% of young drivers insure their car under an older family member. The logic is clear: a parent with twenty years of accident-free history has maybe a 50% bonus, so the premium drops dramatically. Instead of CZK 8,700, you might pay CZK 4,000. You save thousands per year.

But there's a catch. If you cause an accident, it's your parent who loses the bonus — and their premium skyrockets. Two fender benders and your father pays 4.5× more. On top of that, you're not building your own claims-free history. In three years, when you want to insure a car in your own name, you start from zero again. Some insurers also charge a 30% surcharge when the main driver doesn't match the policyholder.

It's not illegal, and in many cases it makes sense — but it's a trade-off you need to weigh carefully. More on this in the chapter How to Save on Insurance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. As long as the car is registered, you must have valid insurance — even if it's sitting in a garage. Without insurance, ČKP charges you a daily contribution of CZK 51–109 for every day. The only exception: a vehicle deregistered from the registry. More in the chapter Liability Insurance — The Basics.

It depends on the car, your address, and the insurer. As a rough guide: an 18-year-old driving a Škoda Fabia pays CZK 6,500–11,500/year, while a 43-year-old pays CZK 2,300–5,800 for the same car. Young drivers (18–24) pay an average of CZK 8,700 per year. More in the chapter Why Young Drivers Pay More.

The law doesn't require it, but for a car worth over CZK 150,000 it makes sense — a total loss would be a major financial hit. For an old car worth less than CZK 100,000, it usually isn't worth it. If you have a car on lease or loan, the bank requires it as a condition. More in the chapter Comprehensive Insurance.

Bonus is a discount for every accident-free year — about 5–10% per year, up to a maximum of 60%. Malus is a surcharge after a fault accident. As a new driver, you start at zero — no discount, base rate. After 3–5 years of accident-free driving, it improves significantly. More in the chapter Liability Insurance — The Basics.

Stop, turn on hazard lights, put on your high-vis vest, set up the warning triangle, check for injuries. If the damage is under CZK 200,000 and no one is injured, you don't need to call the police — just fill out the accident report form. Always notify your insurer without undue delay. More in the chapter What to Do After an Accident.

About 75% of young drivers do this — the parent uses their bonus and the premium is dramatically lower. But there are risks: the parent loses the bonus in case of an accident, some insurers charge a surcharge, and you're not building your own claims-free history. More in the chapter How to Save on Insurance.

Yes. By combining multiple strategies — comparing insurers, choosing a smaller engine, telematics, annual payment, online purchase — you can realistically save CZK 3,000–8,000 per year. Just comparing offers alone can save you thousands in a few minutes. More in the chapter How to Save on Insurance.

Safer Drivers Pay Less

Insurers don't overcharge young drivers out of spite — they calculate based on hard data. According to BESIP, young drivers cause over 10,000 accidents per year. In 2022, 52 people died in these accidents and 250 were seriously injured. The most common cause is excessive speed — nearly half of all accidents involving young drivers.

But there's positive news too. Drivers who went through the L17 programme are demonstrably safer. In 2024, they caused only 6 accidents compared to 1,106 accidents by 18-year-old beginners. And the overall situation is improving — in 2024, alcohol-related offences dropped by 10%, speeding by 10%, and phone use behind the wheel by 20%.

Every accident-free year brings you a better bonus, lower premiums, and peace of mind. Safe driving is the best investment you can make as a new driver — and not just because of insurance.

Probationary period — your first two years behind the wheel

As a new driver, you have a probationary licence — two years of stricter rules. One 6-point offence and you'll need mandatory training. Read more in our [probationary period guide](/probationary-period/).
